BOOK AND BOOKLET PRINTING

Aside Posted on

Creating a book can be a little more complicated than other projects. We see a lot of the same set-up mistakes on many book printing jobs, so here are some helpful tips to review when you’re preparing your materials:

acrobatlogo  USE ADOBE ACROBAT

We strongly recommend submitting your files as PDF’s. If you can prepare a print-ready PDF with the right specs not only will you save a lot of time and cost, you will have a lot more control over the final result. Variables like margins, bleeds, spreads, pageflow and other common challenges can all be addressed ahead of submitting your files for printing, so we can get the results you are looking for the very first time.

You can make PDF’s from just about any software you might be using.  We are happy to answer questions about how to do this, and if you need more guidance we can set up a personal consultation to help you get on the right track.

WORKING WITH BLEEDS

bleed diagram

Be sure to understand how bleeds work. This is essential for professional results. We’ll need 1/8″ of extra background for trimming and content must be at least 1/8″ in from the edge. The gutter or spine of the book needs to be considered as well, since each binding method has it’s own requirements for margins.

BOOK LAYOUT

Know how your book is actually going to be put together. Some production methods will require printer spreads and some will work with flat sheets. If you are making a saddle-stitched booklet or magazine, you will need pages in multiples of 4.

idlogo  ADOBE INDESIGN

InDesign is the tool of choice for creating files to print a book. It’s worth learning to use if you want the ultimate creative and technical control over your project. You can download a free trial at Adobe’s website.

To avoid any confusion between reader spreads and printer spreads, please provide SINGLE PAGES with full bleeds, not reader spreads. This way we have the margins needed to properly order the pages into printer spreads. To learn more about page imposition click here.

pslogo  ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

If you’re making a portfolio, zine, or graphic novel and content is already in a group of Photoshop Images, it may be easiest just to work with those. Organize them by naming the files with their respective page numbers so that they automatically stay in order through the prep and printing.

pagenumber_filename

Make sure the images are at least 300dpi. We make beautiful prints but we can’t print what isn’t there. Also avoid using compression for the best results with digital printing. PSD’s, TIFF’s, and JPEG’s are all fine to work with but be sure to save them at maximum quality. Even hi-res photos print poorly from a low quality JPEG. You can also save them as PDF’s right from Photoshop and combine them into one file which has a lot of advantages as noted above.

wordlogo  MICROSOFT WORD

Although other options are becoming more popular, many of our clients rely on Word for writing and editing text. While there are some important limitations, we can usually get good results from your Word files.

The best workflow is to make a PDF right from your native file on the computer you are using to create the piece in Word. Word files often have text reflow and other formatting issues when moving them from one computer to another. This is caused mostly by inconsistencies in fonts and page specs. Producing a PDF is the best way to avoid that frustrating situation and have a portable, properly-formatted file that will give you the results you are expecting. Once you know how to make good PDF’s you’ll never have to worry about it again.

A Smarter Way to Print: High Quality and Environmentally Friendly Digital Offset Printing

Aside Posted on Updated on

DI ® Press Technology

A Smarter Way to Print: High Quality and Environmentally Friendly Digital Offset Printing

DI ® printing is the process of sending a digital file directly to a digital offset press. This process eliminates the production steps associated with film-based or other offline platemaking. Presstek DI presses allow printers to be more competitive in a market that continually demands faster turnaround time and shorter press runs at lower costs—without sacrificing quality. DI is an enabling process brought about by the interaction of three core Presstek technologies—laser imaging, thermal digital media, and a unique press design.

ProFire Excel Imaging

ProFire Excel, Presstek’s latest generation laser imaging technology, delivers exceptional image quality while dramatically reducing the possibility of moiré patterns in standard screen rulings. Fine details, color fidelity, minimum screen values, and large solids are produced with results that meet the most demanding offset printing needs.

ProFire Excel easily supports screen rulings up to 300 lpi and FM (stochastic) screening.

ProFire Excel combines all of the imaging components—infrared laser diodes, laser drivers, data electronics, and motion control— into one compact system. The foundation of ProFire Excel is a single image data board that controls the laser diodes. Each diode contains four uniquely addressable, 16-micron beams for high reliability, unmatched accuracy, and high-resolution imaging.

Thermal Plates

Presstek’s DI plates are environmentally friendly waterless plates that provide more consistent color, larger color gamut, better color saturation, lower dot gain and more detail. Without the use of fountain solutions there are fewer variables and printing is cleaner—both operationally and on the sheet; plus there is no ink/water balance to manage.

Presstek DI presses set the standard for digital offset printing by combining the high quality and versatility of offset with the automation and speed of digital printing. Presstek’s ProFire Digital Media is a key component of this superior performance and productivity. The combination of Presstek’s ProFire Digital Media and ProFire Excel imaging technology provides an optimized plate/laser system that yields the highest quality offset printing.

ProFire Digital Media is designed to work as a system with the laser imaging, ink-profiling, and plate loading features of Presstek DI presses. In conjunction with ProFire Excel imaging, ProFire Digital Media allows for a 16-micron imaging spot and supports up to 300-line screen and stochastic (FM) screening— with the push of a button.

The advanced imaging features of ProFire Digital Media result in superior rendering of details using any screen ruling—from highlight areas to shadows. Minimum screen values and subtle tonal transitions reproduce accurately and consistently. ProFire Digital Media reduces waste, saves time, and meets the most demanding quality requirements on runs up to 20,000 impressions.

Presstek DI plates are manufactured with an ink-accepting polyester base layer, a middle layer of titanium oxide, and a top layer of silicone. During imaging, the heat from lasers removes the top two layers of the plate, exposing the ink receptive polyester layer. Areas that remain covered with the top layer of silicone will repel the ink.

Unique Press Design

Presstek DI presses use Presstek’s Zero Transfer Printing (ZTP) process. With ZTP all four colors are laid down onto the sheet without any sheet transfer between colors. ZTP provides:

  • First sheet register
  • Precise registration, sheet-to-sheet, job-to-job
  • Sellable color within 20 sheets
  • Excellent ink coverage and reduced waste

A satellite V-shaped 5-cylinder system consists of two sets of double-diameter blanket cylinders and plate cylinders which rotate around a triple diameter impression cylinder. Each sheet is tightly held by the impression cylinder grippers and rotated twice without being transferred for precise four-color printing. The large diameter of the impression cylinder reduces paper curling as well as damage to the substrate.Click here to see it work .

  1. Presstek DI presses use waterless offset inks, for faster drying and better solid ink coverage. The ink train has four form rollers; three chilled rollers cool ink, eliminating toning.
  2. Ink keys are preset during ripping, based on color profiles and exposure area for each color in a specific job, meaning less intervention is required on the part of the press operator to generate the highest possible printing quality. Auto start-up pre-inks plates before sheets move through the press. The landscape format 52DI has 16 ink keys and the portrait format 34DI has 11.
  3. ProFire Digital Media inside each double plate cylinder is automatically dispensed; plates are then tensioned. The press declutches, freeing plate cylinders to spin at 300 rpm during imaging.
  4. Presstek’s ProFire Excel imaging unit precisely images all four cylinders at 2540 dpi in 4.5 minutes.
  5. ProFire Digital Media spools contain enough material for 28 (Presstek 34DI) or 44 (Presstek 52DI) full size printing jobs; used plates are automatically transferred to a take-up area.
  6. Once imaging has been completed, a two-step automatic plate cleaning is initiated. A vacuum then removes any remaining debris from the plate.
  7. DI presses feature double-plate cylinders, with matching double blanket cylinders beneath. The bearer design assures consistent impression pressure. A V-shaped configuration radiates from a common impression cylinder.
  8. The triple-sized common impression cylinder holds three sheets tightly, eliminating potential for misregistration because there is no gripper change. A sheet picks up four colors in two revolutions
  9. A register board/push guide precisely shuttles stock to ensure accurate infeed. Proven feed systems accommodate a wide range of standard stocks, or even plastics, envelopes, and other specialty stocks, in calipers from .0024″–0.02″ (0.06–0.5 mm).
  10. An infrared dryer expedites curing of waterless inks. An autoclean cycle prepares ink rollers, blanket, and plate cylinders for the next image. Total changeover takes about 10 minutes

Control during the print run

Control during the print run

gretagmacbeth density meter

gretagmacbeth density meter

Colour control is achieved using a densitometer or scanner to measure the control strip. Measurement results for each colour tell the printer whether to give more or less ink in a certain area. The print must match the original or the fixed system data as closely as possible. Sample prints are scanned and analysed against the original data. By fine-tuning the ink supply, the results come closer and closer to this colour model. Settings can then be stored in integrated software or recorded on computer tapes for optimal print and re-print runs. As soon as the prints satisfactorily match the original and the colours register perfectly, the real print run starts. However the press operator continually takes sample sheets to monitor and maintain ongoing colour and register throughout the run.

Offset printing technology – basic

Aside Posted on Updated on

Offset printing technology – basic

Offset printing is the most commonly used method today, and has many advantages over other forms of printing, especially when we need high and consistent image quality.

Color wheel

Color wheel

This is a process used for printing on a flat surface, using plates. An image is transferred to a offset plate which is chemically treated so that only image areas (such as type, colors, shapes and other elements) will accept ink. Water and ink is applied to the plate. Because of the chemical treatment, ink only “sticks” to the image areas, which reject the water. Areas without images reject the ink. The images with ink are transported then from the plate to the surface of blanket. The task of printing blankets that are made of special multi-layer rubber is to convey the image or illustration to the paper and this is repeating on every cardboard that passes through the printing machine.  When we print full color job the cardboard is overprinted four times on four separate printing units with different colors.

offset printing "CMYK" rollers

offset printing “CMYK” rollers

Offset printing uses the process colour or four colour known as  CMYK.

  • C‘ stands for Cyan (a colour in the blue/green spectrum),
  • M‘ stands for Magenta (a colour midway in the red/blue spectrum),
  • Y‘ stands for Yellow and
  • K‘ stands for Key (the black key plate).

Loose Leaf

Loose Leaf

LOOSE LEAF
JENIS JENIS LOOSE LEAF
Jumlah Lubang Loose Leaf
Jumlah Baris Loose Leaf

A Based upon print engine speed only. Total throughput times depend upon front-end RIP, file size, printer resolution, ink coverage, networking, etc. Normal Mode based on SuperFine – 1440 dpi. Plate Speeds are based upon a 13″ x 19″ plate size at 1440 x 1440 unidirectional printing. Plates sizes vary drastically depending on the content of the plate.

B Cartridge yields vary considerably for reasons including images printed, print settings, temperature and humidity. Yields may be lower when printing infrequently or predominantly with one ink color. A variable amount of ink remains in the cartridge after the “replace cartridge” signal. Part of the ink from the first cartridges is used for priming the printer. Ink is used for both printing and print head maintenance. All inks are used for both black and color printing.

C Ink lightfastness rating based on accelerated testing of prints on specialty media displayed indoors under glass. Actual print stability will vary according to media, printed image, display conditions, light intensity, humidity and atmospheric conditions. Epson does not guarantee longevity of prints. For maximum print life, display all prints under glass or lamination or properly store them. Visit www.wilhelm-research.com for the latest information.

Macam-macam ukuran kertas

Ukuran Kertas Seri A

Setiap angka setelah huruf A menyatakan setengah ukuran dari angka sebelumnya. Jadi A1 adalah setengah dari A0 dan demikian seterusnya. Ukuran yang paling banyak digunakan adalah A4.
